This was the first movie I have seen in the theatre for six months due to the lockdown and I have to admit, I wasn't expecting too much especially when I heard that Nic Cage has turned down the lead role. It must be bad right?
Wrong
Rachel is running late to work when she has an argument at a traffic light with a stranger whose who has decided to make one last mark upon the world by teaching her a series of deadly lessons. What follows is a dangerous game of cat and mouse that proves you never know just how close you are to someone who is about to become unhinged.
Maybe I enjoyed this more than usual because it was the first film back at the cinema ? Who knows but I found it tense, and anxiety inducing. I was literally on the edge of my seat as were other people in the theatre.
Don't get me wrong, it a brutal, violent and nasty. Some of the violence is shocking at times and I'm surprised it got the 15 certificate it did. The horrendous car crashes make you jump and the deaths are way over the top but I like films like that. It may not be to everyone's liking, that's for sure.
There is one other shocking aspect to this film. Russell Crowe.
He looked like has eaten a horse. I couldn't believe how fat he was. There is no way the character is meant to be that big so he can't use that as an excuse.
Unhinged is a 90 minute trip into hell but in a good way.

This thriller will keep you entertained and on your toes with respect to the level of suspense and action despite its very formulaic plot. The villain's motives are inferred but due to the lack of characterisation, it all seems somewhat unclear and the message if any is convoluted. So because "Karen" couldn't bring herself to say I'm sorry to the fat man, now let's see we have 5 dead and one badly burned brother. And while we're talking about Russell Crowe's weight, only in Hollywood can an A-lister male actor become almost unrecognizably obese and still be able to headline a movie. But poor Kathleen Turner gains weight and gets old and Hollywood is ready to ask her to turn in her SAG card. All in all, the movie was mindless fun and gave Russell Crowe a reason to overact.
